What Is The Best Ad Ever?

In the spirit of the Future of Online Advertising conference (regular readers, I promise I’ll talk about Apple again soon!), I have a question for everyone:

What is the single best ad campaign you’ve EVER seen/heard? This can be print, TV, Internet, radio, or a combination.

And one more question...

Why?

Comments GO!

Wait! One more:

Did you buy it?

Just off the top of my head, the "cha-ching" commercials for Rally's were great in that they became part of the cultural memory so fast.

I'd also say the various Bud "animals" were very good: frogs, iguanas, and what not.

Man, Rallys. I totally forgot about that place (Checkers for some of you, though I don't know if they ran the same ads).

Good ones, mgroves.

The most memorable local ad I ever saw was for the Florida gun show. A "hot" woman with pageant hair and a low-cut top looks directly at the camera, seductively:

"Hi, my name is Tammy. Come to the Florida gun show to see what I've got!"

At which point the camera pans out to show her holding a giant uzi-type gun that she cocks violently.

End ad. Brilliant.

Though I think I'd be caught dead (literally) if I ever went to the Florida gun show, the ad was certainly memorable. Probably 10 years later and I'm still searching for it in vain on youtube.

My brother did end up going one year and bought some throwing knifes (go figure)--not sure how much "Tammy" influenced that decision. I'll have to ask him.

tough one for me to answer since i voice commercials for a living so i'm extremely biased. LOL.

i'd have to say the most recent one OTOH... a coca-cola commercial i saw on youtube (since we don't own a tv).

cheesy pick-up tactic by guy sitting next to girl at a bus stop. he hums the standard nokia ring tone, searches through his bag, pulls out a coke bottle (while still humming), answers the bottle like a mobile phone, hands it to the girl, and says, "it's for you..."

saw the UK and chinese (?) versions.

and yes, i do drink coke. =)

Jumping off Thelma's comment, the thing I find interesting about Coke ads is that they're really effective at creating brand identity/personality. They don't sell me on Coke--I've grown up drinking it. But they do make me feel good about drinking it. And I think that is so important. Because really, we all want to feel like a part of something--not just people being sold to. We don't buy the brand: we are the brand.

I think Apple ads fall into this category as well. The more a "faceless" company can cultivate a personality through their ad campaigns, the more I like them and am willing to use their product.

I think that's the real future of advertising: the most successful companies are the ones who will operate like your best friends.

Coke does a great job with its ads. That one is a great example.

@Bailey: You scare the hell out of me sometimes, but offer a great analysis about ads that work. What you're saying is about building a community, and being safe and boring can't do that.

A brand needs personality, passion, and sometimes that requires polarization - risk alienating some people in order to get people to care. "Creating Passionate Users" is relevant here.

back in the late 90s ABC did a great campaign about "we love tv" and "tv is good" and it was just yellow with text and sometimes they'd do long descriptions about why they love tv, and it was great.

i also like the jack in the box commercials with the meaty cheesey boys... but i don't know if those ever played on this coast. (or any jack in the box commercials for that matter.) and of course, i don't eat meat, so the commercials are largely pointless, but hey...

oh, also i like tiny house. and i thought it was going to be a real show. but it wasn't. stupid geiko.
